Vehicle Chassis Number

Up until 1980, the method of identifying a vehicle is by use of the Vehicle Chassis (Unit) Number which is stamped on a plate fixed to the right hand wheel arch in the engine compartment.

This number is coded as follows:-

example 73101234A 73 = YEAR 10 = MONTH 1234 = CHASSIS NUMBER

ELITEA = Domestic B = Federal (before intro of K & L) & Japan C = R.O.W.
K = Federal 49 States & Canada L = California
ECLATD = Domestic E = Federal (before intro of P & U) & Japan F = R.O.W.
P = Federal 49 States & Canada U = California

Vehicle Identification Number

From 1980 onwards, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) was introduced to comply with requirements laid down by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (USA) and European Economic Community directives. This number is stamped on a plate fixed to the wheel arch in the engine compartment, and also on a plate visible through the lower edge of the windscreen.

There are two variations of the VIN, one for the USA (and some 1980 Domestic & R.O.W.) and one for UK and Rest of World, the seventeen characters being coded as follows:

NOTES:

1. Federal VIN character 6.
501 = Basic Elte521 = Basic Eclat701 = Basic Esprit
502 = Elite with A/C522 = Eclat with A/C702 = Esprit with A/C
503 = Elite with A/C & PAS523 = Eclat with A/C & PAS701 Comm = Esprit Commemorative
504 = Elite Auto A/C PAS524 = Eclat Auto A/C PAS702 Comm = Esprit Commemorative with A/C

2. Seperate serial number sequences are used for the following groups of chassis market (character 12)

    D
    A,E,G,H,S
    B,C,F,K

3. For parts list, workshop manual, and service bulletin purposes, the following VIN characters only will be listed for change point identification.

    Federal - 4,12,14 to 17
    Dom & ROW - 5,6,12, 14 to 17

    Example A typical change point could be listed as follows:
      82D1100
      82 A/E/G/H/S 0341
      F B/C/F/K 0265

    It will be apparent that three numbers are needed to identify the single change point because of the different serial number sequences outlined in Note 2. In this example the
    First number is Domestic Turbo Esprit 1100
    Second number ROW Turbo Esprit 0341
    Third number Federal Turbo Esprit 0265
